Itinerary

Negombo, a city with a rich history, reflects its Portuguese and Sinhala origins, shaped by colonial periods under Dutch and Portuguese rule. Known as "Little Rome" due to its predominantly Catholic population, the city is home to historical landmarks like Negombo Fort and St. Mary's Church. Negombo is also a vibrant fishing hub. The Negombo Fish Market is central to this community, where local fishermen showcase their daily catches. These are dried using traditional methods and sold across Sri Lanka. The beach is often lined with fish drying in the open air before distribution. The Negombo Lagoon is another vital aspect of the city, supporting a diverse natural ecosystem and a crucial fishing industry. A cruise through the lagoon offers a chance to observe endemic birds, reptiles, and amphibians in their natural habitat, while the lagoon's bounty supplies the city's seafood. Together, these elements highlight Negombo's blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.

After breakfast at the hotel, the day begins with a transfer to Kandy, a major city in Sri Lanka known for its rich history and cultural significance. The first stop is the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, established in 1975 by the Sri Lankan Department of Wildlife Conservation. This orphanage provides care and sanctuary for orphaned baby elephants, making it famous worldwide as a symbol of Sri Lankan elephant conservation. Kandy, located in the Central Province, was the last capital of Sri Lanka's ancient kings. The city is set amidst hills and is known for its tea plantations. Kandy is both an administrative and religious hub, home to the Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the world. The temple, housed within the royal palace complex, holds the relic of the Buddha's tooth, making it a key religious and political symbol in Sri Lanka. The temple's significance contributed to Kandy being declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. The day in Kandy also includes a cultural dance show, showcasing Sri Lanka's diverse classical dance forms, including the ritualistic Kandyan dance, low country dances, and Sabaragamuwa dances, each with deep cultural and religious roots.

After breakfast, embark on one of Sri Lanka's most scenic train rides to Ella, a charming hill-country village in the Badulla District of Uva Province. Ella is renowned for its rich biodiversity, with hills covered in cloud forests and tea plantations. The stunning views through Ella Gap offer breathtaking scenery, and on clear nights, you can even glimpse the distant glow of the Great Basses lighthouse on the south coast. Despite its laid-back atmosphere, Ella offers several must-visit attractions, including Halpewatte Tea Factory, Little Adam’s Peak, Ravana Ella Falls, the famous Nine Arches Bridge, and Ella Rock. The train journey from Colombo Fort, a key railway station in Sri Lanka, provides a stress-free way to explore the country. Traveling by train offers a unique perspective of Sri Lanka's picturesque landscapes, especially the lush tea estates, which road travel might miss. Although trains can be slow, the scenic beauty makes the journey worthwhile. A highlight of Ella is the Nine Arch Bridge, located between Ella and Demodara railway stations. This 99.6-foot high viaduct bridge, also known as the "Bridge in the Sky," is a marvel of architectural ingenuity. It was constructed without steel, using stone bricks and cement, during World War I, when the steel intended for the bridge was diverted to Britain's war efforts. The bridge, attributed to local builder P. K. Appuhami, is now a popular tourist attraction due to its stunning surroundings and unique history.
